Graham’s hope for connection

Graham is a veteran who recently became homeless, struggling with his mental health. He had nothing but the clothes on his back.

Alone and isolated in Aberdeen, Graham had no support network. He was given a temporary room in a hotel, but it only had a kettle, and no way to cook proper meals. Graham came to Aberdeen Cyrenians crisis response service needing a lifeline.

He was welcomed into Direct Access and reassured that help was available. Together, they sorted out his benefits and completed an Adult Disability application. Graham was able to choose food he could prepare with a kettle, along with much needed clothes and essentials.

Graham continued to visit regularly for a coffee and catch up with his support worker. He was encouraged to join our community kitchen: CaféChat, and is now a regular, enjoying hot meals and friendly chat. He feels part of a community again, which has helped ease his loneliness.

Things have kept improving for Graham and he has now moved into a permanent home. Furnishings, bedding, and kitchen items have been provided to help him set up. He still meets his support worker to tackle the challenges he continues to face.

“It’s been very difficult. I regularly don’t see another person for days at a time. Knowing CaféChat and Aberdeen Cyrenians are here and provide a warm and friendly space has made a huge difference. Now that I have at least a kitchen to prepare food I feel much healthier, and I have the energy to tackle other things.”
